ISA MSDE Logging

A MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine) database is the default format for storing log files when using Microsoft ® ISA (version 2004 or above).

Importing MSDE data and WebSpy

To import log files from a MSDE database you can run your WebSpy product on the same computer as Microsoft ® ISA.

Alternatively you can run your WebSpy product on a separate computer and configure ISA settings to enable communication with the server:

Import MSDE data using Analyzer

  1. Select Views | Storages from the main menu. Click the Import from database link in the Files task pad to launch the Database Import Wizard.
  2. Proceed through the wizard to the Storage page, select the storage and click Next to continue.
Note: this step does not apply to Analyzer Standard
  3. On the Input Format page, select ‘Microsoft SQL loader’ and click the Properties button to launch the Microsoft SQL Loader Properties dialog.
  4. Enter the name of the time stamp field into the ‘Timestamp Field’ edit box. Click OK and click Next to proceed to the ISA Server page.

  5. Enter the name of your ISA server followed by \MSFW, for example MY_ISA_SERVER\MSFW.
Note: MSFW is the instance name of ISA's MSDE database.
  6. Select how you would like to login to your ISA server. You can select either Windows Authentication or SQL Server Authentication. If you’re using SQL Authentication, enter your username and password.
  7. Click the Test Connection button to ensure you can connect to your ISA Server. If the connection test is successful click Next.
Note: If the connection is not successful, ensure you are using the same credentials that you use to connect to your ISA server and that you can connect to your ISA server using your ISA Server management tools
  8. The Databases page lists all the databases and tables found on the ISA server. They are all disabled by default. There are two methods of selecting the database tables you would like to import:
    • Select Specific:
When the ‘Select Specific’ radio button is selected, right-click the database table you want to import and select ‘Enable’.
    • Specify Mask:
When the ‘Specify Mask’ radio button is selected, enter a database or table mask to import any database or table that contain a certain phrase. For example, you can specify ‘ISALOG_*WEB*’ as a database mask and ‘WebProxyLog’ as a table mask to only import ISA WebProxy databases.

  9. Click Next once you have selected the database tables you want to import.
  10. Select any desired filtering options and click Next until you reach the final page of the Database Import Wizard. Click Finish to start importing.

Import MSDE data using Vantage

  1. Open Vantage.
  2. Select Storages either on the home page or the Storages tab.
  3. Click the Import logs link under the Inputs task pad.
  4. Proceed through the wizard to the Input Type page.
  5. Select Database Connection.
  6. The Loader Section page will display a list of available databases. Select the Microsoft ISA Format.

  7. Proceed to the Input selection page, click Add.
  8. Enter the name of your ISA server followed by \MSFW, for example MY_ISA_SERVER\MSFW.
Note: MSFW is the instance name of ISA's MSDE database.
  9. Select any desired filtering options and click Next until you reach the final page of the Database Import Wizard. Click Finish to start importing.

Note: WebSpy applications are memory intensive and running them on the server is not something WebSpy advises. If however this is the case, it is recommended that imports and reports are run at a time when users are offline and server activity is at a minimum.
