Renewing Your WebSpy License

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Renewing WebSpy Subscription software When you register your WebSpy subscription license, the software will advise you how many days you have left on your current contract. When the contract expires, the software will stop at the splash-screen in the loading process. You will need to contact your WebSpy representative or reseller to purchase a subscription renewal in order to continue using the software. Once your subscription renewal has been processed by the WebSpy team the software you will need to request a new Unlock Code for your installation in order for it to continue working. To do this:

  1. Open the software and click on ‘Register’ on the splash-screen. If the software has not yet expired, you can choose to go to ‘Tools | Registration’ instead.
  2. Your details should already be populated in the Registration Wizard from the previous registration.
  3. Click to the ‘Submit Details’ page and the software will attempt to contact WebSpy’s Registration Server via the Internet to request an Unlock Code. This single-use code will be sent to the email address you specified on the first page of the wizard. The process of issuing the Unlock Code can take up to 48 hours. Your patience is appreciated.
  4. Enter the Unlock Code by copying and pasting it from the email into the Enter Unlock page of the Registration Wizard and click ‘Next’. If you have closed the Registration Wizard since submitting your details, you can go directly to the Enter Unlock page, there is no need to go through the other wizard pages again. The Vantage Ultimate software should now be registered. Next time you start the software the splash-screen will advise how many days are left on your current subscription period.
  5. You will need to repeat the registration process step for the Web Module component of the Vantage software also.

Troubleshooting:

  1. “Unlock Code Not Unique”. If you see this error message when trying to submit your details in the Registration Wizard, this is an indicator that you have already requested an unlock code today. You may only request one unlock code per day. If you need to request a second unlock code, wait until tomorrow, or change your Company or Email details. If you just want to enter your unlock code, go directly to the Enter Unlock page of the wizard.
  2. “403 Forbidden”. If you see this error message when trying to submit your details in the Registration Wizard, this is an indicator that your proxy server may be blocking the connection, and may require authentication. In Vantage Ultimate you can enter your proxy authentication under Tools | Options | Proxy, and in the Web Module you can do this under Options | Proxy Settings. Once you have entered your authentication details, try to submit your registration details again.
  3. “Server Error”. If you see this error message when trying to submit your details in the Registration Wizard, there could be a problem with WebSpy’s registration server. Please notify support@webspy.com. Please also click the Email Support button on the Submit Details page of the wizard to send an email containing all of your registration details, so that we can create a manual registration file for you.
  4. If you see any other errors when trying to submit your registration details, your firewall could be blocking the connection to WebSpy’s server. Registrations are done on port 80, and are accessed via one of the following URLs:

http://registrations.webspy.com/registration.dll

http://newregistrations.webspy.com/registration.dll

http://registrations.webspy.com/registration.ashx

http://newregistrations.webspy.com/registration.ashx

Please ensure your firewall allows this connection. If you continue to have problems submitting your registration details please click the Email Support button on the Submit Details page of the wizard to send an email containing all of your registration details, so that we can create a manual registration file for you.

  1. “Unlock code has already been used”. If you see this error when trying to enter your unlock code, then this unlock code has already been used. Each unlock code is only valid for a single use, and can only be used logged in as the same user account that submitted the registration details.
  2. “Existing information does not match data submitted”. If you see this error when entering your unlock code for verification, this indicates that some of the details on the preceding pages of the Registration Wizard have been altered between the time you submitted your registration information, and the time you entered your unlock code. The details must remain the same in order for the verification to succeed.
  3. Software shows as ‘expired’ on startup. There are several possible reasons this could occur:
    1. Your license has expired. Please contact your local WebSpy account manager or reseller to renew your license.
    2. You have moved the software to a different PC, logged in to the PC as a different user, or the NETBIOS name of the PC that WebSpy is installed on has changed. In this case please go through the Registration Wizard and submit your details to request a new unlock code. If you have recently registered your software please notify support@webspy.com of your need to register again.
    3. “There was a problem with the registration”. If you see this error on application startup, this indicates a corruption of the registration file. Please go through the Registration Wizard and submit your details to request a new unlock code.

If you have any questions about this process, or have trouble renewing your software license, please do not hesitate to contact your nearest WebSpy representative or Support for assistance.

Registering WebSpy Vantage Ultimate – Step by Step

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Here is a quick step by step guide to registering the WebSpy Vantage Ultimate software for the first time. If you have already registered the software before and have just renewed your subscription (and need to request a new unlock code) please follow the guide on this page: http://www.webspy.com.au/blogs/index.php/renewing-your-webspy-license/

Registering WebSpy Vantage Ultimate

This is a guide for new customers to register their WebSpy Vantage Ultimate software for the first time. The process requires a few simple steps which will be outlined below, followed by some troubleshooting options if you get stuck along the way.

  1. The first step is to install the Vantage Ultimate software in the production location where you wish to register it. We recommend using a dedicated user account, such as a WebSpy user, to register the software rather than registering it for multiple user accounts on the machine.
  2. When you launch the Vantage Ultimate software you will see a splash-screen while the software is loading. If your 30 day evaluation period is still active while you wish to register the software, you can use either the ‘Register’ button on the splash-screen, or hit Continue and choose ‘Tools | Registration’ from within the software. Both options launch the Registration Wizard.
  3. Please complete your details including the Serial Number (starting with “VU”) which was issued to you by your WebSpy representative or WebSpy partner.
  4. When you get to the ‘Submit Details’ step the software will attempt to contact WebSpy’s Registration Server via the Internet to request an Unlock Code. This single-use code will be sent to the email address you specified on the first page of the wizard. The process of issuing the Unlock Code can take up to 48 hours. Your patience is appreciated.

Registering WebSpy Web Module

The Web Module is part of the WebSpy Vantage Ultimate license, but is a separate component, and needs to be registered in much the same way as the main Windows application.

  1. Browse to your Web Module installation in your preferred browser. You can get there from the WebSpy folder in your Program files.
  2. Login with your Administrator credentials.
  3. Go to the ‘Options’ page, located in the upper right area of the screen.
  4. In the Registration section click on the ‘Register this Web Module’ link near the top of the page.
  5. Like in the Vantage Ultimate software, complete your details including the serial number (starting with “WM”) and click ‘Submit’ at the bottom of the page, and the software will attempt to contact WebSpy’s Registration Server via the Internet. The single-use unlock code will be sent to the email address you specified on the first page of the wizard. The process of issuing the Unlock Code can take up to 48 hours. Your patience is appreciated.
  6. Once you receive the Unlock Code via email come back to this page in the Web Module and you will have the option to paste the code into the ‘Unlock Code’ section at the bottom of the page.
  7. All things going as they should the Web module should confirm that the unlock has succeeded at the top of the page.

  1. “Unlock Code Not Unique”. If you see this error message when trying to submit your details in the Registration Wizard, this is an indicator that you have already requested an unlock code today. Lessons learned from a hacked Twitter account

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

If you follow @WebSpy on Twitter, you would have received a very strange Direct Message (DM) from us yesterday. Something along the lines of “rofl this you?” or “you’re on this vid!” or “I found you on here!”

Unfortunately, the WebSpy Twitter account fell victim to a phishing scam, and as a result sent phishing spam to all our Twitter followers. We are embarrassed by the incident and we apologize to all of our followers, especially the ones that clicked the link in the DM and were caught by the phishing scam themselves.

Here’s a rundown of the event in the hope that it will help others know what to look out for. (more…)

Business benefits from monitoring and reporting on Internet, email and network log files

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

In previous blogs I have covered why internet access is so important in the workplace, why blocking and filtering should be minimized, and why monitoring is preferred. Today I thought I’d focus on the specific benefits of monitoring and reporting on log files.

To some it might be obvious, but plenty of search queries used by visitors coming to our site contains phrases such as; “Why monitor internet usage important” and “Why analyze log files”.

Majority of benefits directly relate to the network device being monitored so I will structured the business benefits based on this. (more…)

Unlocking the Value of your Log Data. 10 tips to help you get started

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

This is a popular WebSpy article that we decided to re-post. Click here to download pdf version.

What can log data do for you?

Organisations today are deploying a variety of security solutions to counter the ever increasing threat to their email and Internet investments. Often, the emergence of new threats spawns solutions by different companies with a niche or a specialty for that specific threat – whether it is a guard against viruses, spam, intrusion detection, Spyware, data leakage or any of the other segments within the security landscape.

This heterogeneous security environment means that there has been a proliferation of log data generated by the various systems or devices. As the number of different log formats increases coupled with the sheer volume of log data, the more difficult it becomes for organisations to turn this data into meaningful business information.
